5 August 2017

Wedding Reception, Westcott Fields, nr Dorking

This was a sing-out with huge weather contrasts, as the sky alternated between a clear blue and a menacing grey-black. The Downsmen were well into their song list when the heavens opened and we all ran for shelter under the large reception marquee. The bridal pair took it all in their stride and continued chatting to all the guests whilst the rain hammered down on the canvas overhead. The din was so loud (the rain, not the bride) that the chorus completely lost track of where they were with the Barbershop Song, with the leads finishing well ahead of the harmony parts. "When a rainy day comes...", at least we got that one right!

Capel Music Festival, Crown Inn, Capel

Chorus showcase (non-competitive). We sang to a select audience scattered about the beer garden tables of The Crown Inn, Capel. Several of the listeners knew the lyrics, so there was no taking liberties with the verses. The landlord came up trumps with pints all round to finish up, along with a tray full of ham and tuna sandwiches. Any chance we can pencil a booking for next year's festival?

Entertaining the residents, Red House Care Home, Skinners Lane, Ashtead

For a time, the Downsmen were the only bods under cover of a gazebo, whilst all the residents held on manfully at tables placed round the Red House garden (it was raining, but not too heavily). After a few songs from the gazebo, we sallied forth to take up station at the opposite end of the garden and took our chances with the elements. The residents seemed to enjoy the show, even if some of them were none too sure what direction the sound was coming from. Note to conductor: can we add Raindrops keep Falling to the repertoire?

Children's Fun Day, Leatherhead Children's Centre

We had a small but competent group turn up for this singout at Trinity School, Leatherhead. In bright sunshine we entertained the adults and children who had turned up for the event. As we were singing outdoors, we ditched out quieter numbers and belted out the up-tempo ones. A mixed reception from the audience, who were primarily keeping an eye on their offspring, but we were given some nice compliments at the end. Tea and cake later we set off home happy with our efforts.

Singout for Making Music Day, Leatherhead

Making Music organised a national festival to celebrate all things musical on Weds 21st June.
The Downsmen readily joined in by visiting all the open barber shops in Leatherhead. We each had a shave and haircut and those waiting sang songs from our repertoire!?! (What!!! Pardon?!?) If you believe that, you'll believe almost anything!
Actually, we set forth to visit four pubs in the area starting with the Running Horse, then Penny Black, followed by The Dukes Head finishing in our regular haunt, The Edmund Tilney.
We did sing to the customers at each location as well as sampling the local brew(s). Both went down very well, even if some of the customers where a bit confused! Our many thanks to all four landlords who allowed us to sing and the good folks of Leatherhead are now better acquainted with our musical genre. Must do this again sometime!!

Bookham Village Day, Bookham Village Hall

Event Photo Just over a dozen of us sang as part of the afternoon entertainment for Village Day, in front of the stage in the Bookham Barn Hall.
Our first session was at peak lunchtime, and we even found it difficult to hear ourselves, but the second session was better on that score and the audience was very appreciative.

BABS Convention Sing2017, Bournemouth

Sing2017 was this years annual Convention of the British Association of Barbershop Singers (BABS), and is the largest barbershop event outside North America.
This was our first Convention since 2014, with 21 singers on the risers, including some first-timers, under the direction of Miguel Fernandez. We improved (marginally) our score, but we all thoroughly enjoyed performing our two songs before a large and very appreciative audience.

Mole Valley Kings & Queens, Kingston Road Recreation Ground, Leatherhead

Banquet for the Elderly. If the idea was to provide a venue where the different generations of residents could fraternise and have an enjoyable time together, this worked very well. A large gazebo with seats for some 200 provided the setting for this visit by the Downsmen. Miguel went to great lengths to rearrange the chorus before starting, whilst Gary kept everyone entertained as MC. Proceedings were livened up somewhat by a wheelchair user taking off in at some speed in front of the chorus during the performance, but managed to miss the conductor by quite a few inches. Never a dull moment!

2 May 2017

Redhill & Reigate Music Festival, at Reigate Park Church

Event Photo The Downsmen sang the two songs we are preparing for the BABS Convention.
We were in a class of three choirs, including Bletchingley Community Choir and the Surrey Serenaders. We came away with a shield, for the second year running.
